Ski Reno? Yes!

Mt. Rose Ski Resort, just outside Reno, Nevada, is a hidden gem, and a foot of new snow set it off nicely

Skiing at Reno’s Mt. Rose showed that, indeed, there is winter out there.

Mt. Rose Ski Resort is a hidden gem. At least that’s what the good folks here in Reno keep telling us.

It appears that they’re correct.

We arrived there yesterday, a half hour’s drive from downtown, in a blinding snowstorm, and I was relieved to see that, yes, Virginia, there is a winter out there.

The locals are a bit disappointed with the early season here - the mountain is only one-third open.

But, hey, a foot of new powder is a foot of new powder any way you shake it. And the powder shots along the trails’ edges were worth the high winds that buffeted us on the chairlift. A chairlift ride that passed over some incredibly enticing expert Chutes, not yet open.

But, the skiing we did was super - even on some wonderfully inviting, gentle beginner runs.

Mt. Rose clearly demands a return visit when completely open. Who knew you could find such terrain so close to Reno?

A lot of locals, apparently.

Now, on to Tahoe...
