Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. Here are some ideas on how to make the first snowfall a fun-filled, productive event. Get into the holiday spirit early and often.

There is something magical about the first snowfall of the season. A hint of the holidays to come is one part of the intrigue. Here are some neat ways to enjoy the fun as well as to take the time to handle some of the winter preparations, thus making the tough weather ahead much easier.

Get Outside and Enjoy the First Snowfall

This would be a great time to break in cross-country skis in the yard. If there are woods or a park nearby with paths cleared, this would be even better. Trying out snow shoes is another option, but they are best used when the snow is very deep.

Use a shovel or snow blower to make a maze or labyrinth in the backyard. This is particularly fun in deep snow. Form several dead ends and have some sort of reward for the child who finds the “treasure” that is left at the end of the maze. This is a fun way to tire out a rambunctious toddler.

Use a shovel to write something in the yard. Try to write “I love you” in a big way. If one waits until the winter is in full swing, very often in cold climates, it will last a long time through other storms and thaws.

Release Your Inner Child on the First Snowfall

Take the kids outside to catch snowflakes on their tongues, just like they did in the "Charlie Brown" special. Some dogs and cats also enjoy playing in the snow. Give them that chance, too as it will add to the children's enjoyment of the snow. Getting outside to appreciate the glistening scene is good for the soul. While out there, have a rousing snowball fight with the family.

Make a snow fort, snow angels and a snowman if the snow is sticky. Decorate a snowman with an old scarf and hat, use branches for arms and rocks for the facial features. If the snow is very dry, go sledding or tobogganing. A snow fort is easiest to make with a very low hanging bush, like a bridal wreath, which forms walls when the heavy snow weighs it down. Open a section of the wall by pulling the branches aside and go inside the snow fort.

Make the First Snowfall Productive with Chore Completion

Do some household winterization work at the first snowfall. This would include things like caulking any holes or frames, repairing or replacing drafty windows and pulling down storm windows. Call your local energy company to come in and do a free energy audit on the house. They often bring free stuff like energy-saving lightbulbs and blanket wraps for the hot water heater.

Other indoor activities that can be done using the first snowfall as a reminder, is to take down the winter clothes from the attic. The snowfall is a sure indicator that these will be needed; sweaters, hats, scarves and mittens. Swap the clothes and put shorts and bathing suits away until next spring.

Organize winter equipment. This could include getting skis or poles in good shape or taking the snowmobile or snowblower into the shop for a tuneup. The first snowfall is a great reminder for getting these things accomplished now, before the rush. Whatever one chooses to do, take a moment to breathe in the fresh winter air. All the joys of the winter season--skiing, skating and snowmobiling--are just around the corner.

Get outside and work on the woodpile. Bring in wood for an indoor fire ring or fire box and gather kindling or chop some wood for the outdoor stash. When using a chainsaw, don't forget safety glasses or goggles. Cutting wood is a great way to burn off cold-weather cookie calories.

Get some exercise. Even a quick walk in the snow is good for mind, body and spirit. Don't forget about winter driving skills. Slow down, steer into a skid and stay home if the roads get icy. Enjoy the snowfall and let the inner child out to play.
