SouthShores Soldiers Snowboard Camp at Heavenly Resort is uniquely set up for adult riders of all abilities to learn from seasoned pro coaches.
Here’s news for skeptics who think that snowboarding, freestyle snowboarding and snowboard camps are only for rabid, young males.
They’re not.
SouthShores Soldiers Snowboard Camp is in its sixth season of staging intensive instructional camps for adults at Lake Tahoe’s Heavenly Resort.
They call this "adult spring break."
Founded in 2002 by pro snowboarder Jimmy Halopoff—former Winter X-Games and Vans Triple Crown of Snowboarding gold medal winner—and former competitive snowboarder Rob Crosby, the camp is geared towards adults 18 and older. Utilizing private on-hill facilities, an experienced professional coaching staff and a four-to-one rider-to-instructor ratio, SouthShore Soldiers aims to facilitating skills improvement and a good time.
SouthShore Soldiers’ terrain park at Heavenly covers two entire trails and offers has something for everyone: beginner jumps and rails; intermediate features; and those ming-boggling, 100-foot jumps that make you wonder about riders’ sanity.
Freeriding private powder runs is also part of the program.
The coaching staff is headed by Ed McClain, who has trained nearly 20 USASA National Champions, three Winter X-Games competitors, and a member of the 2006 US Olympic Snowboard Team.
Guest pros also make appearances and offer coaching. Among past snowboarders and skiers who’ve come to camp: riders Danny Kass and Shaun Palmer, and skiers Tanner Hall, Michelle Parker, and many others.
Coaching accommodates beginners to expert riders.
Video analysis follows each day’s session.
Meanwhile, back at the motel, SSS’ers have a private lounge in which to hang out, with pool tables, video games, big screen TV, and refreshments.
Nightly parties are also part of the curriculum—be it bowling night or Soldiers VIP Night at Altitude Nightclub in Harrah's Casino. And, several thousand dollars worth of sponsors’ product is given away, either as drawing prizes or contest prizes (like mechanical bull riding).
The SSS lounge and preferred lodging is at the Super 8 Motel.
"The camp combines expert instruction with snowboarding pros in a fun, ‘spring-break’ atmosphere that can get pretty crazy, especially at night," says Crosby. "Whether you are a college student on Spring Break, an experienced shredder and carver, or a businessman on vacation, we make sure camp is equally enjoyable and beneficial for everyone, regardless of whether or not they have ever been on the slopes."
